Pilates and the Lurking Wolf
Pilates and the Lurking Wolf
It is Mental Wellness Month and therefore the ideal opportunity to explore the profound connection between Pilates and mental health. I want to shine the spotlight on how Pilates can help us guard against or help, what I call, the lurking wolf of depression.
Understanding Depression
Depression can be a relentless adversary, often lurking in the shadows like a pack of wolves, ready to pounce at any moment of vulnerability. It's more than just feeling down; it's a pervasive sense of emptiness, hopelessness, and fatigue that can overshadow every aspect of one’s life. There is a myriad of causes, but most importantly is that you recognize it and reach out.

My Personal Journey with the lurking wolf
A few years ago, I experienced deep, personal trauma that plunged me into the depths of depression. I did not address it at the time, and it caught up with me over time. Deep personal trauma can trigger this dark cloud, which was the cause of my downward spiral.
It changed me forever.
It was during this challenging time that I truly experienced the deeper meaning of mind-body work. Mindful movements, controlled breathing, and the sense of achievement after each Pilates session, among other things… I had help, a wonderful network of people around me supported me through it all. Forever grateful.
Ways to keep the lurking wolf at bay day by day
Managing depression isn’t a one-time fix; it’s an ongoing process. Every day you need to work to keep those wolves at bay. Here are some basic strategies that have helped me:
1. Start with Gratitude: Begin each morning by listing three things you're grateful for. This simple practice can set a positive tone for the day.
I hope sharing this very personal experience with you will help you realise that even someone that moves almost every day, has challenges and that it is so important for you and those around you to face that wolf and chase it away with things that are available to you, right there, right now.

2. Move Your Body: Whether it’s a Pilates session, a walk in the park, or a dance party in your living room, physical movement can significantly boost your mood.
3. Stay Connected: Maintain regular contact with friends, family, or a support group. Social connections are vital in feeling supported and understood. Go to a Pilates class, there are always great people there!
4. Mindful Moments: Spend a few minutes each day focusing on your breath. This practice can help centre your thoughts and bring a sense of peace.
5. Seek Professional Help: Don’t hesitate to reach out to mental health professionals if you need additional support. Therapy and medication can make a significant difference.
6. Healthy Eating: A balanced diet can influence your mood and energy levels. Make sure to nourish your body with nutritious foods.
7. Prioritize Sleep: Establish a healthy sleep routine to ensure your body and mind get the rest they need.
